Manchester United swept Everton aside 4-0 at Old Trafford yesterday to join Manchester City at the top of the table.

The Manchester rivals are locked together with identical records – including goals for and against – after City’s 6-0 win at Watford on Saturday.

Wayne Rooney was given a warm welcome on his return to Old Trafford and left to a standing ovation, but it was Antonio Valencia that got fans on their feet as an outstanding half-volley got United on their way.

Ronald Koeman has some serious questions to answer after Everton’s fourth straight loss in all competitions, an outcome that looked likely within four minutes as Valencia met Nemanja Matic’s cross with a stunning effort.

Romelu Lukaku wasted a good chance and Juan Mata hit the post as United attempted to wrap up the win, with Rooney’s 82nd-minute substitution followed by a trio of late goals.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan slotted home within seconds of Rooney’s departure and then Lukaku fired home against his former club before Anthony Martial’s stoppage-time penalty sealed a comprehensive victory.

Chelsea remain third despite being held to a 0-0 draw by Arsenal yesterday.

The Gunner ended a fivematch losing streak at Stamford Bridge in a frenetic and entertaining goalless stalemate.

Chelsea’s David Luiz was sent off late on for a poor challenge on Sead Kolasinac which saw both benches rise to their feet.

Arsenal had the better of the chances, the best when Alexandre Lacazette shot wide after Aaron Ramsey hit the post.

Danny Welbeck should also have done better than head wide in a first half which saw Petr Cech save well from Pedro.

On Saturday Sergio Aguero scored a hat-trick as Manchester City stormed to a 6-0 rout of Watford at Vicarage Road.

Aguero laid on a goal for Gabriel Jesus while Nicolas Otamendi and Raheem Sterling also scored in another stunning show by Pep Guardiola’s men.

Victory means City have now scored 15 goals without reply in their last three games after big wins over Liverpool last week and Feyenoord in midweek.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool endured more frustration as they were held to a 1-1 draw by battling Burnley at Anfield.

Scott Arfield struck the Clarets ahead with their first shot on target and although Mohamed Salah quickly restored parity, Klopp’s men failed to turn their dominance into further goals.

Tottenham are still searching for their first league win at Wembleyafter a frustrating goalless draw against Swansea in the late kick-off.

Roy Hodgson’s first game as Crystal Palace managed ended in a 1-0 defeat to Southampton and lumbered the Eagles with another unwanted record.

Steven Davis scored the only goal of the game and means Palace become the first top-flight team in history to lose each of their opening five league fixtures without scoring a goal.

Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles’ second-half header earned a hard-fought 2-1 win at home to Stoke while Huddersfield were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at home to Leicester.

Gareth Barry made his recordequalling 632nd Premier League appearance in a dismal goalless draw between West Brom and West Ham at The Hawthorns.
