McTominay eager to repay United’s faith

-

Scott McTominay wants to repay Manchester United’s faith and patience by making a first-team impact like fellow late developers Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard.

Having just turned five when he caught United’s eye at the development centre in Preston, the attacking midfielder, who has been involved in Scotland training camps, progressed through the ranks and in May made his firstteam debut aged 20.

That appearance off the bench at Arsenal was followed by a starting role in the home win against Crystal Palace in the Premier League finale, before McTominay was selected by Jose Mourinho for their pre-season tour.

After impressing in the United States, in particular off the bench against Real Madrid, and scoring his first senior United goal against Valerenga, the Lancaster-born player is now in line to be involved in a competitive match for the first time this season as Burton visit in the Carabao Cup third round.

“It’s crazy when you think back to when you’re five years old going to the development centre, and then going all the way through the ranks,” he said.

“It honestly is a dream come true for me to be playing in the first team, and playing against teams like Real Madrid.

“But obviously you just want more and more of that and that is the main thing for my career: to be playing in big games, and just do my best and hopefully see where it takes me.”

Luke Shaw, Michael Carrick and Sergio Romero will be hoping to get their first minutes of the season for Unite tonight.

Chelsea’s Eden Hazard will start for the first time this season when Nottingham Forest visit.

The Belgium playmaker broke his ankle in June and has made three substitute appearances.

Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte said: “For Eden now is the right moment to start the game and to try to play the whole game.”

Manchester City could rest goalkeeper Ederson for their trip to West Brom.

The Brazilian, who suffered facial wounds after a clash with Liverpool’s Sadio Mane earlier this month, could make way for Claudio Bravo.

Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck will be out until after next month’s international break with a groin injury.

Welbeck will miss tonight’s clash with Doncaster, the Premier League games with West Brom and Brighton and the Europa League tie at Bate Borisov of Belarus.

Everton will bid to halt a fourmatch losing run when Sunderland arrive for the Toffees’ first game in a run of four at home.

They have not scored in 404 minutes of football, while conceding 12 in that time.

Koeman is likely to shuffle his options up front, which may see Wayne Rooney rested.
