Men’s shed plan for Auchterarder
A men’s shed project is being planned for Auchterarder in an effort to improve wellbeing and combat social isolation among older men.
The initiative, which provides a meeting place for members, or “shedders”, is being supported by Age Scotland, the NHS and the Scottish Men’s Shed Association.
The first Scottish men’s shed was set up in Aberdeenshire in 2013 and the movement now has more than 100 schemes throughout Scotland.
A report by Age Scotland, The Shed Effect, highlighted their impact on improving health among older men.
Keith Robson, Age Scotland’s charity director, said: “We’re delighted to see the enthusiasm for opening a shed in Auchterarder, and we hope it will fulfil an important role in the community.
“We know from talking to shedders around the country how much they can improve health and wellbeing, and help tackle loneliness and social isolation. I’d encourage anyone who’s interested to come along and get involved.”
Brian McKay, chairman of the Scottish Men’s Sheds Association, commented: “We already know from our experience in Scotland and from other countries that men who are involved in men’s sheds report living healthier, happier and more connected lives.”
Residents are invited to discuss the project on Monday at 7pm in Auchterarder Parish Church.
