Manchester clubs set hot pace at top

- andy Hampson

Manchester City and Manchester United continued to set the pace at the top of the Premier League after wins on Saturday.

Raheem Sterling scored twice as City maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a comfortable 5-0 victory over struggling Crystal Palace while Romelu Lukaku scored the only goal in United’s 1-0 success at Southampton.

Leroy Sane put City in front just before the break and the Germany winger then turned provider as Sterling side-footed his cross home from eight yards in the 51st minute.

Sterling added his second eight minutes later from Sergio Aguero’s low cross before the Argentina forward netted the fourth and Fabian Delph rounded off the rout late on.

Palace, who have yet to pick up a point or score in the league this season, remain bottom of the table, four points adrift of safety, after six games.

United had boss Jose Mourinho sent to the stands late on, but remain behind their neighbours only on goals scored.

Lukaku lashed in his sixth league goal of the season after seeing his initial header saved by Fraser Forster.

Alvaro Morata grabbed a hat-trick as Chelsea extended their unbeaten run in the league to five games with a 4-0 victory at Stoke.

Philippe Coutinho scored his first goal of the season as Liverpool held on to claim a thrilling 3-2 victory at Leicester.

Coutinho, the subject of three bids from Barcelona in the summer, fired home a stunning first-half free-kick to add to Mohamed Salah’s early opener.

Shinji Okazaki pulled one back just before the break but Jordan Henderson restored the visitors’ two-goal lead.

Jamie Vardy grabbed a goal back for Leicester a minute later and then saw his penalty saved by Simon Mignolet.

Tottenham survived a late West Ham onslaught to emerge with a 3-2 win while Oumar Niasse scored twice as Everton completed a 2-1 comeback against Bournemouth at Goodison Park.

Richarlison scored a last-gasp winner as Watford beat Swansea 2-1.
