Determination is an example to us all
The brutal slaying of Perthshire hostage David Haines was one of the most shocking and appalling crimes of recent years.
The impact on his nearest and dearest was utterly devastating.
However, the reaction of Mr Haines’ family since his death has been nothing short of astonishing.
His brother, David Haines, has campaigned around the world for peace – taking his message to countless schoolchildren.
Meanwhile, the terror victim’s daughter, Bethany Haines, has also determined to ensure some good comes from the unimaginably horrific tragedy.
Taking up an Access to Humanities course at Perth College, she has resolved to set up a trauma counselling centre.
Her ultimate aim – fuelled by her tragic father’s own ambition – is to provide a safe place for teenagers who may be experiencing their own traumatic situations.
It is a brave, not to mention praiseworthy, move. David Haines was kidnapped just days into a humanitarian mission.
Helping civil war victims, his determination to aid those less fortunate than himself may have ended tragically, but it is clear his legacy will live on.
He would be hugely proud, surely, of the incredible courage shown by his family in the wake of his passing.
