100 years ago

An inquiry in connection with the fishing industry was held in Broughty Ferry, when a committee of the Fishery Board for Scotland took evidence on the question of reopening Carnoustie and St Andrews Bay for seine net fishing. A petition for the faciltitie­s indicated was promoted by the Arbroath fishermen. It was stated that if this were done probably 60 tons of fish per week would be brought in by seine net fishing. It was also stated that greed had led to the proposed change.

50 years ago

Dundee may build corporatio­n houses which are carbon copies of homes going up in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen or Perth. In turn, Dundee may supply any of the other cities with copies of plans the City Architect has prepared. The idea was mooted yesterday by Lord Hughes, Scottish Under-Secretary with special responsibi­lities for housing when he visited his home city to see house constructi­on. Mr William Hosie, housing committee convener said” “I think the idea is very commendabl­e.”

Rosyth Royal Dockyard has won a major refit contract worth nearly £7 million in the face of stiff competitio­n from several private yards and Devenport Royal Dockyard, their competitor­s for the Trident nuclear submarine refitting base. The Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessel Olna will arrive in Rosyth in the next couple of weeks. More than 400 employees will be working on the 36,000-ton tanker during the six-month refit which will include a complete overhaul of her boiler systems and repainting.

The record-breaking success of Scotland’s Olympic and Paralympic stars was celebrated when dozens of athletes were cheered by children as they arrived at Oriam, the sports performanc­e centre at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. The homecoming event included a Q&A and an opportunit­y for young people to try Olympic sports such as rowing, judo and tennis, aided by tips from the athletes. The event was followed by a public celebratio­n in Edinburgh’s Festival Square.
