High looking to build from good show at Kelso

Sangster’s outfit face tough test against Edinburgh Accies

- Ron evans

Two wins from four starts is not too shabby a way to start your season, but Dundee High Rugby can look back on three opponents from south of Soutra and only one win, against Kelso at Poynder Park last week.

The other win was against Falkirk who seem to be the whipping boys of BT National 1, but tomorrow is going to be as big a test as Colin Sangster’s troops have faced so far this season.

Edinburgh Accies will pitch up at Mayfield with a played four won four record, and trail leaders Selkirk only on points differential.

Mind you, Accies have had little in the way of opposition so far having disposed of Stew/Mel, Jed, Musselburgh and Aberdeen Grammar, of whom all but Jed are struggling, so the capital side may be looking at this one as their first real test.

Dundee coach Colin Sangster said: “We put up a good show to win at Kelso last week and we need to take that into our match this week against Accies.

“When we lost to them last season at home we were a few players short, and we need to wait and see on a couple of injuries for this week but we will be close to full strength – and, if we get our heads right, we could get a result.”

Two weeks in a row on their own turf at Duffus Park could be just what Howe of Fife need, particularly after belying their early season form with a 64-7 hammering of a slightly understrength West outfit last Saturday.

Someone was going to suffer one day when Howe clicked and, with a struggling Peebles side due at Cupar tomorrow, Howe might keep the momentum from the West game going.

It was always going to be tough at Park Farm for Kirkcaldy last week and, although they came away with a losing bonus against Dumfries, who go top, they slip to second spot going in to face GHK at Beveridge Park.

GHK come off a 40-24 win over Lasswade and, with a two wins from four games record, are four points behind Kirkcaldy. The incentive of overtaking them, and the fact they won both encounters last season, suggests this will be an intense affair in Fife.

Glasgow Accies are second top of BT National 3 with maximum points, behind leaders Newton Stewart only on differential.

Perthshire are second bottom of BT National 3 with ‘nul points’, above Orkney only on differential.

That suggests Accies’ visit to North Inch is going to be damage limitation for Shire unless they can really get some momentum going into what has so far proved to be a miserable season.
