International break welcome for Saints

When Tommy Wright walked into the media room at Pittodrie on Saturday it was plain for all to see that he was not in the best of moods after his side’s defeat to the Dons.

That was quickly confirmed when he let fly with both barrels, admitting his team’s display was probably the worst since he took over as boss at McDiarmid.

It was certainly as far removed from what I would call a typical St Johnstone performance as you could imagine, with a total absence of the qualities that have been the backbone of the team’s success in recent seasons.

Adam Rooney will almost certainly never score an easier hat-trick, with Saints all at sea in defence.

Up front, they were toothless and failed to register a single shot on target.

Dons keeper Joe Lewis will almost certainly never pick up an easier win bonus.

However, all over the pitch, the Dons were dominant and were well worth their three points.

Wright insisted the result was a “blip” in the bigger picture, and Saints are still in fourth place in the Premiership table on the same points as Rangers.

The Dons defeat, though, was the second time in a row that they have conceded three goals away from home, following on from the 3-2 loss to Dundee, which will be a worry for the manager.

So the international break has probably come at the right time for St Johnstone, giving them some breathing space to work on what David Wotherspoon called “getting back to basics”.
