Group set up for older men to meet and share knowledge
A new community project in Perthshire will allow older men to share their skills in a sociable setting.
The Auchterarder and District Men’s Shed is to hold regular meetings every Tuesday at 2pm to 4pm at Auchterarder Parish Church Community Centre.
Around 20 people have already attended inaugural meetings and the group has formed a steering committee.
They are applying for funds to buy equipment for wood working and other activities.
The shed, which is supported by the local NHS and Age Scotland, is part of a growing movement which aims to combat social isolation among older men. The first Scottish one was set up in Aberdeenshire in 2013, and there are now more than 100 throughout the country.
Chairman John Boyd said he was delighted by the interest in the project.
“There are a lot of older men in Auchterarder and the surrounding area who would benefit from the shed,” he said. “We would welcome anyone who’s interested to come along and have a cup of tea and a chat.”
The church has offered free use of its garden room and participants can also enjoy hot drinks and games such as bridge and dominoes.
Keith Robson, Age Scotland’s charity director, said: “It’s very encouraging to see the level of support for this shed, and we wish them every success.
“We hope it will provide a place for local men to come together, share skills and experiences, and be part of a welcoming community.”
A recent report highlighted the positive impact of similar groups on older men.
