FOOTBALL

CITY WOMEN SO CLOSE

Glasgow City women were only one goal away from completing a remarkable comeback in the Uefa Women’s Champions League at Petershill Park in the city last night.

Trailing 3-0 from the first leg against BIIK Kazygurt, of Kazakhstan, their task was made even more difficult when they went a goal down in the first half to trail 4-0 on aggregate.

But they fought back with a hat-trick from Abbi Grant and a goal from Noelle Murray to lead 4-1 on the night.

And agonisingly they struck the post with an 81st minute penalty which would have put them through to the last 16 of the competition, but ultimately went out on away goals, drawing 4-4 on aggregate.

MANN PIPPED TO GLORY: Gullane’s Marc Owenson edged ahead of Fraser Mann, Carnoustie, with a final round of three-under-par 68 to his rival’s 70 to win the Scotsman Trophy as Scottish Golfers Alliance champion over 54 holes at Monifieth Links.

Owenson achieved the best win of his fledgling pro career, worth £1,000 in cash value but probably more in terms of being a confidence-booster, with a seven-under-par total of 206, having had earlier rounds of 70 and 68.

Mann was level with Owenson after two rounds of 69 before yesterday’s final round.
