Dundee minister asks for help to craft army of spooky pumpkins
Four-hundred glowing pumpkins to form eerie spectacle at St Luke’s churchyard
A Dundee churchyard is set to glow with 400 lit-up pumpkins this Halloween.
St Luke’s pioneer minister Stewart Budden is keen to involve the Downfield community in carving out the pumpkins, which arrived in the church this week.
They will then be lit up with candles and displayed in the churchyard, located on St Luke’s Road.
On October 31, Captain Budden plans to hold a free community event with refreshments, games and various Halloween-themed entertainment.
He said: “I arrived in Dundee recently and am keen to involve the local community as much as possible in the church.
“I thought a free outreach event for families would be a great way to do that.
We really do need as many people as possible – we had ordered 200 pumpkins, butduetoa mix-up we received 400. MR BUDDEN
“I had the pumpkins delivered from England, and I’m going to hand them out to schools, care homes, community groups, and anyone else who would like one.
“The only thing I ask is that people carve them, and I will then collect them to bring back to the church.
“On the 31st, we will light them up and put them around the churchyard.
“I think that would look quite nice and create interest in the area.”
Captain Budden arrived in Dundee in November last year and said he was still getting to know the area, meaning he is keen to meet as many locals as possible.
His role is to make the church accessible to people who would not normally visit.
He added: “The Halloween event is for everybody of any age.
“It would be great to see as many people there as possible.
“I also hope that the local community will get behind the pumpkin idea and get involved with the carving.
“We really do need as many people as possible – we had ordered 200 pumpkins, but due to a mix-up we received 400.
“It will be a challenge to distribute them all, but hopefully the final result will be worth it.”
