Bronze Age hoard explored

Archaeological finds from across Tayside and Fife will be discussed in Dundee next month.

The Tayside and Fife Archaeological Committee will hold its 40th annual conference on Saturday November 4.

The programme will focus on the most recent fieldwork, excavation and research carried out in Tayside and Fife over the past 12 months.

Alain Blair of Glasgow University’s Archaeological Research Division (GUARD) will give a talk on a Bronze Age hoard discovered in Carnoustie.

A gold-decorated spearhead, a sword and scabbard fittings were among the 3,000-year-old items found in a pit which was being excavated to create two football pitches in Carnoustie.

Chris Fyles of Alder Archaeology will discuss the excavations at Perth Theatre and Jane Geddes will give a talk on The Drostan Stone, a Pictish stone at St Vigeans.

A number of other speakers will also attend the event.

Gordon Barclay will discuss how the Firth of Forth was defended from 1880 onwards while Colin Donald will be speaking on the past, present and future of Dundee Law.

The committee was founded in 1977 and has published a journal about its finds and research each year. This year it will be made available online instead.

Tickets for the event at Dundee University’s Dalhousie Building cost £15 and can be purchased at the door.
