A man has appeared at Dundee Sheriff Court charged with breaking into and stealing from 10 takeaway restaurants and newsagents during a three-week Tayside crime wave.

Shane Reilly, of the city’s Orleans Place, appeared in private from custody before Sheriff Derek Reekie yesterday afternoon to face 16 charges in total.

Reilly, 21, made no plea and was denied bail.

All but one of the 16 charges relate to breaking into shops and stealing items or attempting to steal from them.

Among the charges it is alleged that on September 29, Reilly tried to force open a metal shutter at the Tandoori Hut on Dundee’s Craigowan Road and Dino’s take-away on Brownhill Road with the intent to steal.

On the same date, it is alleged Reilly broke into the Brownhill News Costcutters store on Brownhill Road and stole a quantity of alcohol and tobacco.

He is also accused of committing the same offence on the same day at the Charleston Supermarket on the city’s Craigmount Road.

On October 6, Reilly is accused of breaking into the Golden Sky Chinese take-away on Buttars Loan, Dundee, stealing a cash register drawer and a television.

It is further alleged Reilly broke into Paperchase Wholesale on Nobel Road on the Wester Gourdie Industrial Estate, Dundee, on October 8, where he stole £400, tobacco grinders, e-cigarettes and a number of toy guns.

On October 15 and 17, Reilly is accused of breaking into the Tesco supermarket on South Road, Dundee, stealing a cash drawer containing money, a large quantity of electrical items, aftershave and alcohol.

Also on October 17, Reilly is accused of forcing open a window and attempting to break into Paperchase Wholesale, with the intent to steal.
