Architecture inspires workshops

-

A renowned Scottish artist is bringing a series of architecture inspired workshops to Perth.

Edward MacMillan, who recently moved to the Fair City from Inverness, launches the first in a series of Saturday morning classes at the Fergusson Gallery on November 4.

The first session, using pastels and pencils, will complement the centre’s latest exhibition, The Artists and The Architect, which details the relationship between Charles Rennie Mackintosh and JD Fergusson.

Mr MacMillan said: “A lot of my work has concentrated on the buildings of Inverness and also landscapes of the Outer Hebrides.

“Culture Perth and Kinross (which runs Perthshire’s galleries) had seen my work, particularly my recent solo exhibition in Inverness and thought it would be a good fit.”

He said: “In the classes I’ll be showing that you can take two different approaches.

“You can try and represent buildings in a detailed way, or you can be looser with your interpretation of them. People think you’ve got to be accurate when you sketch or paint buildings but it can be freer than that.”

Follow-up sessions will be held at Perth Museum and Art Gallery on November 11 and 18.

“I hope to not only give some tips on capturing buildings in art, but to teach people about art materials,” Mr MacMillan added.
