Police caught student with knife
A carpentry student was caught carrying a knife in Perth city centre, a court has heard.
Shaun Stewart had the blade in his trouser pocket while he was out at night with a group of friends.
He was one of several young men who were spotted clambering up scaffolding at Cutlog Vennel, off High Street, near the Perth Theatre construction project.
Perth Sheriff Court heard police on patrol approached the men and noticed a strong smell of cannabis.
The officers’ focus turned to Stewart, who seemed to be visibly uncomfortable.
Depute fiscal John Malpass said: “The accused (Stewart) appeared nervous and was asked to keep his hands visible.
“He was searched and a knife was found in his front pocket.
“It was a locking knife with a three-inch blade.”
Mr Malpass said: “He told police it was for a carpentry course.”
Stewart, 20, whose address was listed on court papers as The Stables, Perth, admitted having the blade in a public place without reasonable authority or excuse on February 2, this year.
The court heard that Stewart was 19 at the time of the incident and is still a student, studying joinery.
Sheriff William Wood said he needed more information about Stewart’s circumstances and deferred sentence until Wednesday December 13 for background reports.
