Reclaim the Night march against domestic abuse and sexual violence
Families will march through Perth city centre as part of a “reclaim the night” event to highlight the horrifying impact of domestic abuse and sexual violence.
The walk is part of a series of local events that will shine a light on offences against women and explore ways of eradicating them.
The Perth and Kinross Violence Against Women Partnership (PKVAWP) is backing the 16 Days of Activism campaign, which kicks-off on Sunday November 25.
It features events organised by local and national organisations, including workshops, exhibitions and the screening of a documentary at the Birks Cinema in Aberfeldy.
The Reclaim the Night march will take place on Thursday December 7 and follows a successful inaugural event last year, which was supported by 150 men, women and children.
Organised by the area’s Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre (RASAC P&K), the march is open to all as a protest against all forms of violence against women, to make them feel safer in their communities.
It will begin and end at the council buildings at 2 High Street, with Provost Dennis Melloy giving a civic welcome to everyone taking part.
Lex Greig, who chairs PKVAWP, said: “Violence against women is widespread, affecting women of any age, class, race, religion, sexuality or ability and recent events in showbusiness and politics have highlighted this fact.
“Our programme for 16 Days of Activism 2017 takes account of this wide range of issues affecting women and aims at raising public awareness while, at the same time, challenging and supporting those who help.”
