Campbell eager to avoid ‘custard pie in the face’

Lichties big favourites when Berwick Rangers come calling in cup

Arbroath manager Dick Campbell has warned he doesn’t want a proverbial custard pie in the face when they host Berwick Rangers in the William Hill Scottish Cup third round today.

The Lichties are sitting pretty in fourth place in League One after a Rab Douglas-inspired victory over Queen’s Park at Hampden last Saturday.

They are big favourites to see off a Berwick team from the lower division, but Campbell is determined not to take the visitors lightly at Gayfield this afternoon.

Campbell said: “You look forward to these cup games but you also have to make sure you don’t get a custard pie in the face.

“We are at home but Berwick will be tough opponents for us.

“We want to be in the next round and we will be doing our utmost to get there.”

The aforementioned Douglas, who made his debut for the Lichties at the grand old age of 45 against the Spiders, is unavailable today so regular goalie David Hutton will return.

Campbell confirmed: “Yes, there will be no Rab in goal but he’s like Frank Sinatra so I’m sure there will be another comeback some other time.”

The Lichties have received international clearance for striker Leighton McIntosh, who has been playing in Iceland with UMF Selfoss.

Ryan McCord is also available but Gavin Swankie is out.

Berwick boss Robbie Horn reckons that his side will enjoy being the underdogs.

He explained: “No one is expecting us to do anything as Arbroath are so strong all over the park, so there is no pressure.

“We know that we have a good defence and they will face a severe test.

“However, that is something to look forward to.

“If we can keep their attack out then we have a platform to spring a surprise.”

The Borderers will miss on-loan Hearts midfielder Marcus Godinho, who has not been given permission to play, and Steve Notman is out after being injured in his testimonial against Rangers in midweek.

Michael McKenna has shaken off a knock and is included.
