10. Suzuki Swift 4x4

Suzuki’s great little Swift is one of the only superminis available with four-wheel drive. It won’t get you across the Gobi Desert but it’ll cope with the worst the Scottish winter can throw its way. It’s great value too.

9. BMW X3

BMW’s mid-size SUV is great to drive, has a terrific range of efficient engines, and is packed with technology. Little wonder more than 1.5 million of them have been sold.

8. Audi Q5

The all-new version of Audi’s popular performer improves on the original in every regard. Smooth, refined, grippy and with the best interior design on this list, it’s a superb all-rounder.

7. Mazda CX-5

Another car in its second generation, the CX-5 is more spacious than its rivals. The latest version boasts sharper looks, better ride comfort and much-improved sound insulation, making the interior a whisper-quiet place to spend time.

6. Seat Ateca

Seat’s take on its sister-company Volkswagen’s Tiguan offers the same quality and driving experience at a slightly lower price. A low centre of gravity makes it one of the most dynamic SUVs to drive.
