ROCKTALK GIG GUIDE

-

Book Yer Ane Fest XI takes place this weekend over three days, at three Dundee venues.

Promoters Make That A Take Records have once more pulled out all the stops to provide dozens of bands for fans of hardcore and punk at the three-day, DIY punk festival at Conroy’s Basement, Deacon Brodie’s and Abertay Students Centre.

After a Pre-BYAF warm-up night in Glasgow’s Bloc last night, the action kicks off in earnest tonight where at least nine bands, led by The Smudjas and Stonethrower and also featuring Tragical History Tour, will be performing from 4pm at Conroy’s Basement, with the main show starting at 6.30pm at Abertay.

Tomorrow’s day two features a hardcore brunch with two daytime events featuring The Spook School, Murderburgers, Kaddish and more than 20 others who will be cranking out the noise from noon at Deacon Brodie’s and 2.30pm at Abertay, along with the late show at Conroy’s Basement from Midnight.

The hardcore brunch continues on Sunday with another two daytime shows starting at noon at Deacon Brodie’s and a 2.30pm shift at Abertay, featuring more than 20 bands including Fat Goth, Billy Liar, Flatfoot 56 and Terrafraid.

Weekend tickets are available for £30 or it’s £15 and £10 for day tickets from makethatatakerecords.bigcartel.com

And if anybody is still standing and fancies a wee trip to the capital tonight, there’s a post BYAF co-promoted by Massive Nights at Bannermans in Edinburgh, starting at 7.30pm and costing £5 on the door.

Bands playing are Good Friend, Stonethrower, Tim Loud and Goodbye Blue Monday.

Also at Deacon Brodie’s tomorrow is Brian Doc Wound from 9pm, which is free entry.

2manydjs return to the Reading Rooms tonight after a crazy, hazy set last year.

The Dewaele brothers need no introduction, having carved a massive place in the industry with their initial Radio Soulwax pt2 mix, which threaded together all the best and funkiest bits from music from every genre they like.

With their band Soulwax they did much the same, covering the songs they’d made previously and remixing music of others in a dance-floor-friendly manner.

From politically incorrect prog-rock to funky R&B, from trendy hiptrop to banging German techno, this formula has seen the Dewaeles become figureheads of the dance music scene for years.

Gates open at 10pm and you can get your tickets from skiddle.com and residentadvisor. net and support comes from All Good residents Van D and Ethan Bell.

There’s an extra-special Book Club tomorrow with Dekmantel and Houndstooth regular Call Super. Cal is a DJ and musician from London who has quietly carved out his own place in the landscape of electronic music with choice cuts pushing into techno.

Tickets are £10 from Groucho’s and residentadvisor.net and gates open at 10pm.

Sunday Mass returns this week with a takeover by Wax Collective, a St Andrewsbased group dedicated to electronic music. Gates open at 10.30pm.

It’s Uncle Phil’s Ho Ho Ho’down on Thursday with MC Salum and Van D laying out all the usual party jams – from hip hop and R&B to bass, disco, house and anything else.

Tickets are £4 from residentadvisor.net and gates open at 10.30pm.

Number 57 has its weekly acoustic session tonight at 9pm. Tomorrow’s tea time teaser features Bedrock from 5.30pm, followed at 9pm by The Sixties. The Junkyard Dogs are in their usual Sunday slot at 7pm.
