Saints beaten by only goal of the day

-

The weather was the big winner on Saturday, wiping out all the Scottish Junior Cup ties and all but one league game, writes Peter Rundo.

And with just one or two minor changes, Saturday’s card is carried forward to next weekend.

The one game that beat the weather was at Barnetts Park in the Premier Division where hosts St Andrews lost to Dunbar United by the only goal of the game.

That came against the run of play five minutes from the interval when Steven Tait chipped the keeper.

But, although Craig Morrison’s men had the bulk of possession, they huffed and puffed, creating nothing better than half chances.

This second successive defeat dealt a further blow to their promotion hopes.

Although only two points off one of the two automatic promotion places, Saints have played four more games than second-placed Fauldhouse United.

In a hastily arranged friendly at Dundee DISC, Downfield defeated Lochee Harp 3-1.

Harp took consolation from the reversal as they gave four 16-year-olds 40-45 minutes in the second half.

All of them held their own very well – indeed one scored the goal – against a very experienced Downfield side.

In the only other friendly, Tayport ran out 4-2 winners over AM Soccer on St Andrews University’s Astroturf.

Manager Charlie King, who gave the bulk of his squad game time, described it as ‘a useful exercise’.
