Mr Bonar Law, replying to Mr McKenna in the Commons yesterday, announced that the Turks in Jerusalem had surrendered. He said: “General Allenby reports that on the 8th he attacked the enemy’s positions south and west of Jerusalem. Welsh and home country troops, advancing from the direction of Bethlehem, drove back the enemy, and passing Jersualem on the east, established themselves on the Jerusalem-Jericho road. At the same time the London Infantry attacked the enemy.”

A 15-year-old boy led police to the body of seven-year-old Emmanuel Malliart in a snow-covered wood at Versailles, near Paris, yesterday and confessed to the murder of the frail, asthmatic child, missing since last Monday. The 15-year-old schoolboy, identified only as JeanClaude M., admitted bludgeoning Emmanuel to death and then demanding ransom money from his parents, police said. The boy was last night charged with kidnapping and murder and women in Paris wept openly at the news.

The Prince and Princess of Wales bravely carried out public engagements yesterday as news of their separation was broken by Buckingham Palace and the Prime Minister who made a statement to MPs in the House of Commons. Although there must have been sadness behind the princess’s famous shy smile, it flashed regularly and there was nothing to indicate any inner turmoil about the historic news as she toured a factory in Tyneside, although her face occasionally took on a miles-away look.

Residents of Dundee’s City Quay development have called on Dundee City Council to change “nightmare” speed bumps they believe are damaging their cars. Drivers say they have become fed up of constant visits to the garage to repair damage caused by driving over bumps along both South Victoria Dock Road and WestVictoriaDock Road. Home owners claim their repair bills are in the thousands due to the material and size of the bumps. Concerns were expressed previously by residents.
