Appeal to make sure unwanted dogs have the best Christmas

-

Animal lovers are being asked to show their support for the Perthshire Abandoned Dogs Society (Pads) this Christmas.

Like many animal rescue organisations Pads has a busy time over the festive season, and this year is no different with the charity caring for a large number of unwanted dogs.

“We like to give our dogs the very best time at Christmas and would be very grateful for donations,” said Joanna High, Pads assistant kennel manager.

“They all enjoy their food and their treats.

“We have already received gifts from the good folk of Perthshire, for whose support we are very thankful.”

The society would like new homes to be found for its canine residents, but is happy to wait until the new year.

“It is not our policy to rehome dogs over the festive season,” A carpentry student who was caught carrying a knife in Perth city centre has been ordered to complete 120 hours of unpaid community work.

Shaun Stewart had the blade in his trouser pocket while he was out at night with a group of friends.

He was one of several young men who were spotted clambering up scaffolding at Cutlog Vennel, near the Perth Theatre.

Perth Sheriff Court heard police on patrol approached the men and noticed a strong smell of cannabis.

The officers’ focus turned to Stewart, who seemed visibly uncomfortable.

He was searched and a threeinch locking knife was found in a front pocket. said Joanna. “We would rather wait until the celebrations are over.

“Very often it is the case that people – with the best intentions – want to give a home to a dog at an emotional time of year. Then, when the fun is over they may regret taking on a responsibility that perhaps is not right for them.”

To make a donation, or bring gifts to the dogs at Pads, call the kennels for details on 01764 684491 or email padskennels@btinternet.com. To find out more go to padsdogrescue.com

Pads is a well-loved and longestablished local dog rescue charity that operates from kennels at Forteviot, a few miles south-west of Perth.

The kennels are open to the public from 1pm to 3pm on weekdays and from 1pm till 3.30pm at weekends.

Police catch student carrying knife

Solicitor Rosie Scott told the court: “The knife was one he used at college. He never took it out of his pocket and he simply forgot it was there.”

She said police had approached other men in the group before searching Stewart.

Sheriff Michael Wood told him: “You are clearly a hard working young man who shows considerable promise.

“However, the court has to take a dim view of the fact that you were in a public place with a knife in your pocket. It seems there was a series of bad choices that led to this offence.”

Stewart, 20, of The Stables, Perth, admitted having the blade in a public place without reasonable authority or excuse on February 2.
