Saints let down by ‘not doing basics’

Wright picks fault with all three Dons’ goals

-

He said: “If you look at the first half we started OK and then got caught ball-watching for the first goal. The corner was another set-piece where people haven’t done their jobs and we were 2-0 down.

“We responded well and had a great chance from Macca (Steven MacLean) and if Stefan (Scougall) doesn’t break from the wall at the freekick I’d have been looking at my goalkeeper for conceding from that range.”

Wright added: “I’ve just said to the players that the big clubs used to hate coming here but too often this season we haven’t done the little things well enough.

“I couldn’t say that Aberdeen ripped us apart but I could say we have ripped ourselves apart. Too often we’ve not done the basics well enough.”

Murray Davidson went off in the first period with an ankle injury but Wright said it was too early to assess the severity.

Derek McInnes was a satisfied Aberdeen manager.

He said: “We know how difficult it can be here.

“We showed brilliant work-rate and scored good goals at the right times. A lot of my players are playing with confidence and you can’t ask for much more than three goals and a clean sheet.”

McInnes admitted the speculation over his future may have affected his players in recent weeks.

Although he does not think it was the sole reason for a drop-off in form, he admits it may have been a factor.

“It’s an easy thing to assume and you may well be right,” he said.

“But I felt we were really convincing at Kilmarnock. It was a very Aberdeen-type performance but we followed it up with two disappointing results against Rangers, who played very well, especially at Ibrox.

“But when you don’t win games its easy to assume the focus is on something else, like the speculation.

“But the players are taking responsibility for the game. You’d need to ask them if subconsciously they are in a better frame of mind but the work we’ve been doing is the same.

“Over the last few years we’ve raised the standards and been used to winning so when wins don’t come so freely it can be seen as something dramatic.”
