Bairstow (119) nonetheless had much reason for personal satisfaction after he and Malan (140) pushed their doublecentury fifth-wicket stand into Ashes record territory.
“This hundred in many ways was my favourite, because obviously I’ve played in a few Ashes so far now,” the Yorkshireman said.
“To score an Ashes hundred is something you dream about as a kid, and it’s eluded me until now.”
It was only when he got caught up in the celebration that he instinctively bumped his forehead on his helmet.
“That was a bit of light-hearted fun, wasn’t it, with everything that’s gone on?” he added.
“I’d not thought about (doing it). It was a whole heap of emotions, and that’s exactly what Ashes cricket, what Test cricket, is about.”
Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood shared seven wickets for the Australians, who lead the series 2-0.
England will reassess seamer Craig Overton’s fitness today, after he jarred his rib diving for a caught-and-bowled chance.
Fast bowler Mark Wood has been seconded from the Lions squad to travel with the Test players to Melbourne and Sydney, where the fourth and fifth matches will take place over Christmas and new year. Ben Proud won silver in the 50m freestyle at the European Short Course Championships in Copenhagen.
Proud, who claimed gold in the 50m butterfly at the World Aquatics Championships in July as well as freestyle bronze, had qualified in fifth place for yesterday’s final.
The 23-year-old then produced a fine sprint display when back in Royal Arena pool as he held off Italian Luca Dotto to take second place behind Russian Vladimir Morozov.
Plymouth Leander swimmer Proud clocked a new personal best of 20.66 seconds as Morozov set a championship record of 20.31secs to take gold.
Earlier, Olympic champion Adam Peaty had qualified in second place for the 100m breaststroke final.
Peaty, who had to settle for bronze in the 50m breaststroke on the opening day, won the first semi-final with a championship record of 56.74.
However, Russian Kirill Prigoda then recorded the fastest time of 56.02, which set a new European record in heat two.
Ross Murdoch’s swim of 57.55 was enough to see him through to today’s final in seventh place.
Former Strathallan School pupil Duncan Scott had won bronze in the men’s 200m freestyle on Thursday but the 20-year-old could only manage ninth place in his 200m medley preliminary.
Kathryn Greenslade missed out on a medal with a fourth place in the 200m backstroke final as she finished in 2:04.75.
Charlotte Atkinson placed fifth in the final of the 200m butterfly, while Jocelyn Ulyett failed to qualify from her 100m breaststroke semi-final.
