Fife Flyers claimed their fifth straight Elite League win when they cut down Sheffield Steelers last night.

The Kirkcaldy men came from behind to earn the 3-1 road victory against one of Britain’s most decorated clubs.

Mathieu Roy slotted for Sheffield after 11 minutes, assisted by Zack Fitzgerald, and the scoreline stayed the same until the first break.

The Fifers hit back and Todd Dutiaume’s men took advantage when the Yorkshire side hit penalty trouble.

Shayne Stockton scored on the power play after being set up by Ricards Birzins.

The goal after 36 minutes 58 seconds was followed by another, this time from Chase Schaber.

Again, the Yorkshire side were under penalty and it was Danick Gauthier who assisted on this occasion in 38:14.

It took until 52 seconds from time to finally nail the win when Charley Mosey scored.

Sheffield coach Paul Thomson gambled by withdrawing netminder Ervins Mustukovs, and Gauthier and Schaber were on hand to set up Mosey for the clincher.

Fife’s highly-rated netminder Andy Iles had 44 shots to deal with in the 60 minutes while Mustukovs had 30.

This notable result against one of the big clubs in the 12-strong Elite League will give coach Dutiaume and his squad a massive lift as they go into the busy festive period.

On Saturday Fife clawed their way back into the Challenge Cup quarter-final with two late goals in a 3-3 draw with Belfast Giants.

The in-form Irish side led 3-1 going into the second period of the first leg in Kirkcaldy thanks to first period goals from David Rutherford, Glasgow-born Colin Shields and Darcy Murphy.

Evan Bloodoff countered for the home side on the power play but Todd Dutiaume’s men upped a gear in the middle session.

A power play strike from Carlo Finucci after 21 minutes and a leveller from Gauthier less than six minutes later means the sides go into the second-leg in Northern Ireland on January 9 all-square.

Elsewhere, Braehead Clan skidded to their fourth straight defeat as Guildford Flames came from 3-1 behind with four unanswered goals in the final session.

Flames led 1-0 after three minutes but Ville Hamalainen, Mike Embach and Landon Oslanski fired the home side ahead.

The English side dug deep and earned their seventh win in eight games thanks to a 5-3 victory.
