Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without ice skating, sparkle and fairytales – three things that were in abundance at Dundee’s Pete and Tink on ice show.

The queue at the 11.30am showing stretched way out into the car park of the ice arena as families turned out in their droves to see the performance, put together by Dundee Ice Skating Club and Ice Coaching Elite.

Walking in, one couldn’t fail to be impressed by how the normally humdrum, fluorescent-lit ice rink was transformed for the occasion.

Fairy lights twinkled in the semidarkness as excited children bought glow-sticks and Santa hats from the stalls, while the adults enjoyed a festive drink and food in the VIP area.

My recollection of the Peter Pan storyline was somewhat rusty.

However, it all came back to me as I watched the skaters performing spectacular jumps and spins. The cast, decked out in the sparkliest of costumes, boasted some of the top skaters in the country.

Younger skaters also had the chance to shine, with fairies, mermaids, pirates, Indians and “lost boys” making up the chorus, Learn to Skate members opening the show and the Dundee Stars Junior Development team playing a cross-ice game of hockey during the interval.

It was clear that a lot of thought, time and effort had been put into the show and it was an enjoyable day out and the perfect way to get into the festive spirit.
