Young says Rovers ‘wanted it more’

ALBION ROVERS 3 EAST FIFE 2

Any hopes East Fife’s players had of an extended festive break were dashed by boss Darren Young after their 3-2 defeat at Albion Rovers.

The Methil manager cut a frustrated figure after a game in which he saw his side take the lead for the second week in a row but end up pointless.

The only remedy is hard work, according to Young, so plans to give his players today off have been cancelled and they’ll be on the training ground.

The Fifers settled into the game the better of the two sides. Aaron Dunsmore marauded into the Rovers box and his effort nestled into the bottom corner.

The hosts were level after a sustained period of pressure in the Fife half. Alan Trouten created space for himself in the box and set up Connor Shields, whose strike beat Fife keeper Mark Hurst.

The game spun on its head a couple of minutes later when Rovers raced into the lead, Trouten finding the corner of the net from 12 yards.

The Methil men got the game’s fourth goal before the 30-minute mark.

Lamont chased down a long throughball which Daniel Potts got to before the Fife forward.

But the Rovers keeper made a hash of his clearance and screwed his kick straight into the path of Greg Hurst, who slammed into an unguarded net.

The hosts started the second half at a terrific pace and were unlucky not to edge ahead again when Gary Fisher’s strike rebounded off the post.

Rovers grabbed the crucial next goal, Scott McLaughlin’s free-kick squeezing into the bottom of the Fife net.

Young said: “Over the piece Albion Rovers deserved the win.

“We go a goal up and started the game very well.

“But their first goal is poor and the second comes off a throw-in and is poor again.

“We got a bit of luck for another goal ourselves and changed the formation a bit to push further forward.

“In the second half we had an advantage with the wind but it never happened.

“They wanted it more.”
