100 years ago

The year is closing under the most remarkable conditions that have ever existed in the history of the jute trade. Prices have exceeded all expectatio­ns, although now as the result of Government interventi­on limited maximum figures have been establishe­d. The lowest price of the period for 10½ oz 40 in. hessian was 5¼d, and the highest 10d to 10¼d. In the early months of the war the price dropped to 2¼d. These limits form the lowest and highest contrasts of the whole crisis.

50 years ago

For the first time the Scottish Industrial Estates Corporatio­n, at the instance of the Board of Trade, are to build a factory in Arbroath – probably on the Elliot estate. The 12,500 square feet building will be for one of the town’s youngest firms, the Panmure Tool & Engineerin­g Co Ltd. News of the project was given at a conference in the Town House by Provost Spink. With the provost were Colonel G.W. Dunn, chairman of the company and managing director Mr W.F. Millar.

For most players of golf, the delight of a hole-in-one is something seldom, if ever, experience­d. Not so the case with Dundee youngster Kevin Norrie, who achieved perfection the first time he stepped on to the course at Camperdown. To complete an incredible double, Kevin’s ace was achieved with a five-iron, part of a set he had only just received as a Christmas present. Kevin (13), a first-year pupil at Harris Academy, chose the the 17th hole at the Dundee course for his achievemen­t.

Residents of a Perthshire street have criticised police for refusing to tell them why it was closed as explosive experts attended. A house in the community of Carsie, Blairgowri­e, was the focus of intense attention over Christmas after a suspicious item was recovered by officers. Amid fears it was an unexploded mine, ordnance experts from the Navy attended and police cordons were in place. Residents criticised the police for failing to keep them informed of what was happening.
