Scottish Cup ties put on ice again

-

Downfield were the only Courier Country side due to see action this afternoon, but, because of the continuing wintry weather, their Scottish Junior Cup replay at Wishaw has been postponed.

With the Beltane pitch under a blanket of snow, the game was called off yesterday.

The teams will now try again next Saturday which means Downfield’s Premier clash at Dalkeith is off.

The third round replays between Cumbernauld United and Newtongrange and East Kilbride Thistle v Thorniewood United were also called off, along with Dyce and Irvine Meadow’s sixth attempt to meet for the first time at Ian Mair Park.

With most clubs having elected to take a festive break, the freezing conditions also put paid to the only league game due to be played, the Super League fixture between leaders Linlithgow Rose and Bo’ness United at Prestonfield.

Due to the conditions very few of this week’s friendly matches went ahead even on artificial surfaces.

Last night’s friendly between Kelty Hearts and Dundonald Bluebell was postponed with New Central Park’s artificial pitch snowbound, and yesterday afternoon’s Jeanfield Swifts v Coupar Angus game at Letham was also off.

Luncarty’s game with Kirrie Thistle did go ahead at DISC last night with the Perthshire side running out 5-3 winners.

A few friendlies were played earlier in the week.

At DISC, Forfar West End beat Blairgowrie 5-1 with recent signing Jamie Montgomery scoring.

Scone Thistle were 4-1 winners over Barnhill Amateurs, while Crossgates Primrose lost 4-2 to Lumphinnans United.

Meanwhile, off the pitch, John Dunn has been appointed the new manager of Violet after Ralph Henderson’s shock departure.

He and his backroom staff from Fairmuir Violet, the Glenesk club’s feeder under-19 side, have taken over with immediate effect.

A statement from Violet read: “We are sure John and his team will continue the good work they did with our sister club Fairmuir Violet, which already has two or three youngsters featuring regularly in the Violet first team.”

Meanwhile Andy Heggie, previously assistant to Henderson, has been appointed chairman.
