All hail the new sausage roll king

-

Food fans are making a beeline to the newly-crowned king of sausage rolls in Blairgowrie.

Butcher Kenneth Allan, who owns the town’s HW Irvine shop on Perth Street, struck diamond for his sausage rolls at this week’s Scotch Pie Awards.

Mr Allan, who took over the business six years ago, said: “The amount of winners coming out of Perthshire is pretty impressive.

“We’re obviously doing something right.”

He said his secret was simply high quality Scottish produce.

“Our sausage rolls have always been popular, but we decided to change the recipe last year, to try something new,” he explained.

“We had a great response from our customers.

“They were telling us we should enter them in an award and it turns out they were right.

“Getting a diamond award is just incredible, we’re absolutely delighted.”

He said: “We’ve had a lot of customers in this morning, saying they read about us online last night.”

Mr Allan is now preparing for increased demand from sausage rolls fans far and wide.

James Pirie and Son at Newtyle, just a few miles down the road, walked off with the coveted World Scotch Pie Champion award. Murrays Bakers of Perth, a previous world champ, struck bronze for its hot savouries and macaroni pies.

Last week, Perth’s DG Lindsay and Son won diamond for its steak pies at the Scottish Craft Butchers Savoury Pastry Products Awards.
