“In the column of January 9 you reported that reader Anne Brown has been researching her relative, John Reid, who died of wounds in November 1917 while serving with the Royal Engineers,” emails Dundee reader Ian McCraw.

“The memorial plaque in Albert Square Church, which she mentioned, was unveiled on Sunday, July 2, 1920 by the Duke of Atholl before a capacity congregation. This congregation was originally the Gaelic Chapel.

“The plaque listed, in alphabetical order, the names of 39 men of the congregation killed in the Great War. I was interested to see that John Reid’s name was followed by that of Andrew Sandeman, my mother’s cousin, killed at the Battle of Loos in 1915, aged 18.

“Andrew’s name is one of 917 that appear on the Black Watch Memorial in Dundee Parish Church (St Mary’s).

“There is also a memorial in St Mary’s to the members of the 205th (1st Dundee) Field Company of the Royal Engineers, in which John Reid served, who gave their lives in the 1914-1918 War.

“Albert Square Church is one of the congregations that, through unions, is now represented by Meadowside St Paul’s Church, Nethergate.

“The memorials from the several congregations were replaced by a Book of Remembrance prepared by the artist, Ian Turner, and kept before the congregation on a lectern.

“I expect that Anne Brown would be made very welcome in the two churches to inspect the memorials.”
