WRIGHT: St Johnstone line up new recruits – and French trialist

St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright has revealed that the Perth club are quietly going about their business – and are closing in on a couple of January signings. French midfielder Erwan Maury has arrived for a trial and Wright is also making progress regarding other potential new recruits.

“Transfer windows are always a busy time and I have been working away quietly in the background with the chairman to add to the squad,” Wright reported.

“It would be foolish in the extreme to think we aren’t working hard to bring players in.”

Wright continued: “We are close to one or two targets, including getting one player on a pre-contract and maybe getting something done to bring him here this month. And I want to bring another in on loan.

“If I get the two I want done that will be it.

“There’s plenty of time left before the window shuts and just because it has been quiet in terms of who we are targeting and wanting to bring in doesn’t mean we haven’t been working hard on getting deals done under the radar.

“I am looking two bring in two wide players. That is my priority now. If I get them we will shut up shop, apart from some younger players maybe going out on loan.”

With Michael O’Halloran getting game-time for Rangers in Florida, Wright isn’t banking on August’s player of the month coming back for a second loan spell at McDiarmid Park.

“It looks like Michael has settled in again and is back at Rangers to stay,” said the Saints boss.

“Unless things change from the Rangers end I can’t see anything happening with us. The door is still open at the moment but if I get two wingers in that wouldn’t be the case.

“If I get one winger in and things change with Michael I might go back to the chairman and ask the question. But I can’t afford to wait and the vibe from Ibrox is that they want to keep him.

“I have Erwan Maury a 21-year-old trialist over from Dijon at the moment. We were alerted to him by my French contacts and we will see how he does this week.

“David McMillan has had a good break and has settled in quickly. We will assess him later in the week.”
