Semi-final scramble hots up
Division 1 teams have their first two of three pool matches tomorrow to determine who will be in the semi-finals, writes our men’s hockey correspondent.
Grove Menzieshill have won all three initial matches in Pool A, so that makes qualification for the semi-finals that much easier and their first match, against Wanderers, effectively decisive.
Wanderers’ second match, against Clydesdale, will be crucial if they lose to Menzieshill.
There was little between the two in the league stage, Wanderers taking a three-point advantage into the pool after a win on the first day.
Leaders Kelburne and Inverleith are firm favourites in Pool B.
Menzieshill II go into the last Pool A match in division 2, against Watsonians, with a four-goal advantage over Western.
Western, on paper, have the easier task against Inverleith II but whether they can make up that deficit is arguable as a favoured semi-final draw is at stake.
Carnegie are in pole position in Pool B and guaranteed that no matter their result against Wanderers II.
The Dundee team and Falkirk will finish third and fourth in Pool B but the fourth team will be in a relegation play-off.
Wanderers have a sixgoal advantage but play Carnegie, while Falkirk face Uddingston, who are guaranteed the less favoured semi-final spot.
There is little to choose between Perthshire, Kelburne II and Aberdeen Grammar at the top of division 3.
Shire should have a relatively easy start against Stepps and a straightforward finish against Granite City Wanderers, the bottom two. In-between they face Aberdeen Grammar who are only a point behind the Perth club.
Monarchs’ match against Kelburne II could also be significant in determining the top positions, especially if they can repeat the form of last weekend.
Menzieshill III are just off the promotion race but could have an effect on it, especially if they can defeat Aberdeen Grammar.
