-

Dr John Scott Soutar, a former consultant radiologist who led the campaign to raise money for Ninewells Hospital’s first full-body CAT scanner, has died. He was 83.

Dr Soutar was born in Dundee and attended Harris Academy, where he played rugby and cricket for the school teams.

He studied medicine at St Andrews University and graduated in 1958.

The following year he joined the Royal Navy, serving in Singapore, Malta and at the Royal Naval Hospital Haslar in Hampshire.

In 1978 Dr Soutar returned to Dundee and began working as a consultant radiologist at Ninewells Hospital.

During his time as chairman of the radiology division, Ninewells Hospital bought its first full-body CAT scanner.

The scanning equipment was paid for entirely through donations from the public.

Dr Soutar was also secretary of the Scottish Radiological Society.

In 1988, he helped to implement the first Tayside-wide breast screening programme.

Dr Soutar served for 10 years in the Royal Naval Reserve and was the Tay division’s medical officer for a number of years.

Dr Soutar then moved to Prince Edward Island in Canada, where he also worked as a consultant radiologist.

After retirement, he returned to Tayside and settled in Kirriemuir, where he became chairman of the Kirriemuir Day Care Centre.

Dr Soutar was also a member of the Rotary Club.

He is survived by his wife Elisabeth, children Norman, Alasdair and Caroline and eight grandchildren.
