Successful herds at Scottish Limousin Club contest

Breeders from the north and north-east have been recognised in the Scottish Limousin Club’s herd competitio­n.

The supreme champion herd title went to Ian and Wendy Callion’s Lodge herd, which is based at Bolfornoug­ht on the outskirts of Stirling.

The couple took the top title after leading the charge in the medium-sized herd, and coming out top for the best heifer and best bull born in 2016.

They led the heifer section with Lodge Maria, by Lodge Hydro and out of Lodge Helena.

Their bull section leader was Lodge Mo, by Lodge Hamlet and out of Lodge Indie.

Standing reserve overall in the contest was the Shannas herd, run by John and Margaret Penny at Shannas, Mintlaw, Peterhead.

Large herd – 1 Spittalton herd, Andrew Burnett, Upper Spittalton Farm, Blairdrumm­ond, Stirling; 2 Grahams herd, Robert Graham, Airthrey Kerse Dairy Farm, Bridge of Allan, Stirling; 3 Clury herd, Walter Cruickshan­k, Clury Farm, Dulnain Bridge, Inverness.

Extra large herd – 1 Shannas herd, John and Margaret Penny, Shannas, Mintlaw, Peterhead; 2 Ronick herd, Ronald Dick, Mains of Throsk, Stirling; 3 Maraiscote herd, Ian Nimmo, Bogside Farm, Wishaw, North Lanarkshir­e. Best heifer born in 2016 – 1 Lodge Maria from Ian and Wendy Callion; 2 Stephick Mistique from Stephanie Dick; 3 Aultside Mystique from Garry Patterson.

Best bull born in 2016 – 1 Lodge Mo from Ian and Wendy Callion; 2 Aultside MeanMachin­e from Garry Patterson; 3 Grahams Michael from Robert Graham.

Best calf born between January 1 2017 and March 31 2017 – 1 Meadowrig Neive from A Renton and Reddon Partners; 2 Westpit Nova from Andrew Gammie; 3 Ronick Nichou from Ronald Dick.

Best calf born after April 1 2017 – 1 Grahams Nova from Robert Graham; 2 Lodge Nina from Ian and Wendy Callion; 3 Ronick Nissan from Ronald Dick.

Best stock bull and progeny – 1 Rathconvil­le Eugine, Ronick herd; 2 Goldies Comet, Maraiscote herd; 3 Jalex ItsAllGood, Westpit herd.

Best cow family – 1 Grahams Coffee, Grahams herd; 2 Spittalton Doreen, Spittalton herd; 3 Shannas Ulrika, Shannas herd.

The judge for the annual contest was Henry Savage who runs the Trueman herd at Newry, County Down, Northern Ireland.
