A year on, Trump can’t be tamed

-

It has been quite a year for the leader of the free world.

It is exactly one year since Donald Trump’s inauguration – and still many can barely believe he is President.

But, like him or loathe him, one certainly cannot deny the business tycoon turned unconventional politician has made an impact.

Approval ratings are not good, but given Mr Trump’s apparent desire to thrive on controversy that can hardly be regarded as a surprise.

There has been no shortage of rhetoric from the President, but critics will point to a lack of tangible action in many areas.

In fact, fewer bills have been signed in Mr Trump’s first year than during the same period of Clinton, Bush or Obama’s respective presidencies.

The man himself, of course, takes issue with those statistics, stating: “We have signed more legislation than anybody”.

It is a typically bombastic response. Never afraid to level the “fake news” accusation at others, Mr Trump is clearly his own biggest fan.

Yet the US remains an important ally for many in the world, not least the UK. Our divorce from the European trading bloc is likely to make the relationship with the US more important than ever.

Keeping Trump on side is unlikely to get any easier.
