Gowfers see off Kilsyth to reach last 16

Panmure advance in Scottish Cup but Swifts and West End see hopes ended

- MARK JOHNSTON

Carnoustie Panmure secured their place in the last 16 of the Scottish Cup with a comfortable and fully deserved 2-0 win at Duncansfield over Kilsyth Rangers.

The Gowfers started the game on the front foot and never really let up. The only real surprise was that it wasn’t until the 33rd minute that Alan McSkimming’s side took the lead.

Ryan Dignan, who got off his sick bed to play, found himself in acres of space before sending a pin-point cross to Jamie McCabe who planted his header beyond the keeper.

Carnoustie continued to dominate but the hosts had a chance to equalise on 55 minutes when Derek Paterson was penalised for hand ball. However, the penalty kick sailed well wide of Alan Cormack’s goal.

The visitors hit Kilsyth with a sucker punch 60 seconds later as Sam Simson started a move which ended with the winger slamming the ball into the back of the net to secure the club a place in the last 16 for the first time since the cup-winning season of 2004.

There were plenty of goals at Riverside Stadium but, unfortunately for Jeanfield Swifts, late goals for visitors Beith put an unfair slant on the scoreline.

Kerr Milliken put the visitors 2-0 in front with a double inside the first eight minutes. Jeanfield levelled it up with only 20 minutes gone, Daniel Kelly pulling one back on 10 minutes before Robbie Holden equalised.

The visitors went back in front just before the break through Tom Collins and, with the hosts chasing an equaliser, Beith scored three times in the last 11 minutes through Joe Bradley, John Sheridan and Andy Reid to make it 6-2.

Forfar West End were left to rue their luck after a 2-1 defeat in Ayrshire against Kilbirnie Ladeside.

Reece Montgomery put West End in front after 10 minutes but the hosts were level five minutes later through Jon Scullion.

With 80 minutes gone West End were unfortunate to have a goal disallowed thanks to an offside flag.

Scullion then broke West End hearts with the winner just three minutes from time.
