Loons boss Weir disappointed with lack of sparkle against Diamonds

Forfar Athletic’s erratic season continued after losing narrowly to Airdrieonians at Station Park.

The Loons just can’t get any consistency to their campaign and find themselves still in the relegation play off spot instead of closing the gap on the teams above them.

Manager Jim Weir didn’t hide from the fact his side probably didn’t deserve to take anything from the game, although there were some flashes of decent play from Forfar, giving hope that they might yet find a way to climb the table.

“If I am being perfectly honest, I thought Airdrie were the better side overall and I have to hold my hands up to that,” Weir admitted.

“I thought we started the game alright, we were in the front foot and got into some really good areas.

“But then I thought they started to pick us off a wee bit. Their front three were very good and playing at that higher level, being full-time, and it seemed to really show in the first half.

“The goalie has had some great saves again, but I really felt they deserved to be going in at half-time in front. We made a change at the interval but the biggest disappointment for me was we got into good areas but our delivery was terrible. Our set-plays were awful.

“At times we were four up front but you could throw a blanket over them as they were so close to one another.

“We never look to stretch teams and I keep saying the same thing to them. When we have possession we need to make the pitch as wide as we can.

“We never really made their goalie make a save, although we got into good positions at times.

“But we also made a lot of mistakes, gave the ball away and did not pass it as well as I would have expected to.

“We do have a very young side and that’s not looking for excuses, but we have to match other team’s energies throughout. We also have to learn from our mistakes today.”

Although there was only one goal in the game, Forfar were saved from a far heavier defeat thanks to a string of great saves from man-ofthe-match Marc McCallum. The Forfar keeper pulled off a number of point-blank stops to keep his side in with a faint chance throughout.

But he could do nothing in the 39th minute when his defence was all at sea as Dale Carrick was perfectly placed to head home from inside the six-yard box
