Blebo remembered

-

“I thought readers might be interested in this old picture postcard of Blebo Craigs, which is in the parish of Kemback, near Cupar,” writes Ruth Walker of St Andrews.

“The house in the picture is at the top of the Loan, the long path leading up from the Cupar to St Andrews road. On the other side of the road, close by, is the village hall, which is still enthusiastically looked after by the local residents.

“Long ago, when my father was minister of Kemback, there was a monthly service held in the hall. There was usually a coal fire blazing away in the grate, which made the place feel very homely. The hall is still well used by the residents, I believe.

“There is still a red phone box in Blebo Craigs, but I do not think it is operational and it is not as old as the one in Dura Den, which is also part of Kemback parish.

“In our time, a Mrs Redpath lived in the house by the telephone box. In another part of Blebo Craigs are stone quarries. There were also smallholdings in the area. Many of the houses on the right hand side of the card did and still do have fine, long gardens. There was also a Post Office further along.

“Long ago, one could hear the siren from the paper mill at Guardbridge booming out when it was dinner time!

“There were some fine old characters living up at Blebo in our day. I remember visiting Miss Bethune who lived to a great age. Her brother was a road man and she herself had worked a team of horses at Lathockar Farm.”
