Experts are offering couples in the city the chance to witness a live heart dissection – on Valentine’s Day

Staff from the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification (CAHID) will slice open the animal organ in the name of science at the Malmaison Hotel on February 14.

Dundee University’s Claire Cunningham, a mortuary technician at the CAHID, is leading the event, which will offer couples the chance to learn more about the heart on the most romantic day of the year.

Ms Cunningham said: “It’s time to see where the real heartstrings are.

“As we approach Valentine’s Day, images of hearts are everywhere, but how much do people actually know about the real thing keeping us alive?

“This gave us the idea of offering people something different to do this Valentine’s Day so we are inviting members of the public to come and see how blood enters the heart, understand how it beats and learn how this can all change.

“As our dissection will include a real animal heart, discretion is advised.

“Those who don’t wish to see the dissection can step out at that point and although young people are welcome at the event, they should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.”

The event will take place from 6pm-8pm with proceeds going to the British Heart Foundation. There are limited spaces available.

The event is part of the nationwide Anatomy Nights series aimed at educating the public about the human body.
