100 years ago

While the situation on the Clyde has greatly improved during the last few days over the manpower question, the trouble is not yet over. The time allowed by the Trades Committee for a reply by the Government expires today but it is now practicall­y assured there will be no strike this weekend. Food queues are now agitating the Clyde workers and at a meeting of stewards it was proposed to stop work and parade in protest. This was defeated, but a deputation was sent to interview the Corporatio­n.

50 years ago

A Government Minister visiting Newcastle-upon-Tyne will not be asked to stay for lunch – because the city has already been too hospitable. With six months of the civic financial year still to run, by the end of September all but £38 of the £5,600 set aside for civic hospitalit­y had gone. Councillor William Harding, chairman of the Finance Committee, told a City Council meeting last night. One of the many items cut out is a civic lunch for Mrs Judith Hart, Minister of Social Security.

Sixties pop idols Herman’s hermits took a step back in time when they visited Dundee on Saturday. The group, famous for hits like I’m Into Something Good, dropped in to see the Back To The 60s exhibition at the McManus Galleries. The band were in the area for a concert at Letham Farmhouse Hotel in Perth and, on hearing of the exhibition, said they would love to see it. They were impressed with the display, voting the comprehens­ive collection of 60s memorabili­a a success.

One year ago

Demolition work started yesterday to bring down buildings on the site of the former Menzieshil­l High School in Dundee. Heavy machinery was spotted entering the site in the morning. The city’s councillor­s had voted to close the school after the roll fell below 500 pupils. Despite widespread opposition from local community and parent groups, Menzieshil­l duly shut its doors for the final time at the end of the last school year. Pupils were moved to the refurbishe­d Harris Academy.
