The Courier & Advertiser (Perth and Perthshire Edition)
World’s greatest adventurers remembered by author
Some of the most exceptional adventure stories of the last 150 years will be the theme of a talk in Perth.
Over the past three years, Royal Scottish Geographical Society (RSGS) writer-inresidence, Jo Woolf has been immersed in the society’s vast historical archive.
The result is her book The Great Horizon, which features adventures connected to the society.
At her talk in Perth’s Salutation Hotel at 7.30pm on Tuesday she will be bringing these tales to life with a richly illustrated presentation and a subsequent question and answer session.
Featured in the talk will be tales from some of history’s most famous names, such as Sir Ernest Shackleton, Sir Edmund Hillary, Neil Armstrong, Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Sir David Attenborough.
RSGS chief executive, Mike Robinson said: “As our writerin-residence, Jo has delved deep into the RSGS archives and unearthed some truly fascinating stories from our history.
“We hope that the wonderful insights in Jo’s talk – along with her accompanying book – will encourage people to want to learn more about these great men and women, perhaps ultimately inspiring them to head into the wild on their own adventures.”
During the event, Ms Woolf and two other volunteers for the society, Freda Ross and John Lewington, will be awarded honorary fellowships which are presented to recognise people’s enthusiasm and commitment over many years.
