Warriors dominate but fail to turn pressure into points
NEWPORT GWENT DRAGONS 15 GLASGOW WARRIORS 15
Glasgow Warriors wobbled in Wales last night – but they remain firmly on course to clinch a Guinness PRO14 title play-off slot.
Dave Rennie’s fringe stars dominated the Dragons, but failed to turn pressure into points at Rodney Parade.
Glasgow had made the worst possible start. A shocking line out throw by James Malcolm paved the way for the hosts to create a patiently worked try for his opposite number Liam Belcher.
Then Brandon Thomson spilled a George Horne pass in the danger-zone as they tried to hit back quickly.
Warriors continued to make sloppy mistakes –however they were reprieved as a Zane Kirchner penalty crashed to safety off the upright.
Thomson surged back into the spotlight for the right reason in the 16th minute. Horne sent a perfectly-weighed lob towards the line, and Thomson pounced for the crucial first touch.
Adam Hastings missed the conversion – but made amends by slotting a penalty from dead in front midway through the half.
Horne then scuttled over from 30 metres after Nick Grigg had breached the defence. Hastings’ strike opened up a 10-point gap, only to see Kirchner reply in identical style at the other end.
There was still time for the Dragons to snatch a superb kick-chase try for Jared Rosser – Kirchner’s kick levelling the encounter.
Glasgow claimed the vast bulk of possession and territory after the restart, but they struggled to find the gaps when it mattered.
