Breeders from the west dominate show

-

Cattle from the west dominated the championship awards at the Highland Cattle Society’s show in Oban.

The overall bull champion, Eachan Ruadh of Hyndford, came from Alan Prentice, who has five Highland cows and a plant hire business at Ravenstruther in Lanarkshire.

His rising three-yearold sire already has an impressive show history, having won the junior championship at last year’s Royal Highland Show and the reserve overall junior championship at the Stars of the Future event in 2016.

He was described as having “great stature, lots of hair and walking so well he showed himself”.

The female champion was Furan Magaidh 7th of Glengorm, from Glengorm Estate on the Isle of Mull and shown by Alva-based professional stocksman Dexter Logan.

She is an in-calf rising four-year-old and was champion of champions at Bute show and reserve overall champion at Dalmally last year.

Mr Dexter said she was a very feminine animal with “good conformation and an excellent coat of hair”.

The reserve female champion was Catriona 4th of Gartocharn, a daughter of Brogach 1st of Balmoral, from Mr and Mrs J McKechnie, France Farm, Gartocharn.

Reserve male champion was Michael Poland’s Eoin Mhor 17th of Mottistone from Upham, Southampton.

This February 2015born sire was reserve overall champion at the 2017 national breed show and breed champion at Dalmally and Appin shows.
