USOpen faces huge bill for fall

-

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) is facing a large compensation pay-out after a New York court ruled it bears most of the blame for Eugenie Bouchard’s fall at the 2015 US Open.

The Canadian star sued the organisers of the grand slam tournament after she slipped on a recently cleaned tiled floor in the trainers’ room.

Having reached the tournament’s fourth round, the 23-year-old was forced to withdraw with a concussion and then missed the rest of the 2015 season.

Bouchard, pictured, was ranked 25th in the world at the time but has struggled ever since and is now outside the top 100.

Her lawyer Benedict Morelli told Press Association Sport: “We are very pleased but not surprised that the jury went in our favour.” Hosts MJV Dundee Wanderers went down 8-2 against Spanish club champions Campo de Madrid as Europe’s top echelon of indoor championships began yesterday, writes our women’s hockey correspondent.

World superstars were in abundance on board the European bandwagon as it rolled into town for a exciting weekend of thrills and spills at Dundee International Sports Centre (DISC).

Rotweiss Wettingen’s international line-up had to rely on a last minute strike to scrape a 4-3 victory over Ukraine’s MSC Sumchanka before pool B rivals Amsterdam posted a 2-0 win over Belarussians Ritm Grodno.

Fancied Uhlenhorst didn’t have things all their own way against Austrian’s Arminen who got a share of the spoils in pool A.

Wanderers made a decent start against the more experienced Madrid.

The pacy Spaniards opened up a 2-0 gap before Sam Sangster’s pass split their defence to release Amy Snelle for a clever finish. But Madrid went on to go 4-1 up at the interval.

Two more goals sealed victory before Wanderers’ first set-piece of the game was rammed home by Sangster. Shotstopper Carmin Dow kept it 6-2 with a brilliant save from a penalty, but two last minute singles made it 8-2.

In their second game, Wanderers went down 1-0 to Arminem.

● National League Premier Division teams join in hostilities for the first time since November.

Defending champions Edinburgh University are predicted to maintain their leadership at the expense of Watsonians, while Grove Menzieshill are odds-on favourites to keep the pressure on with a home win over Grange.

The local universities are propping up Division 2. St Andrews have a slim chance at home to Cala, but it’s longer odds on Dundee doing likewise at ESM.

Kinross, Perthshire and the university second strings are in action in Championship League 2, with Perthshire looking best placed to claim victory over Ayr.

Blairgowrie have a chance to cut the gap to leaders Madras by beating Brechin Thistles. And Monarchs are the latest side tasked with putting the brakes on champions elect Grove III in Division 2.
