Gable Endies out to ‘make life difficult’ for favourites Peterhead

MONTROSE 2 BERWICK RANGERS 2

League leaders Montrose had to settle for a point from a 2-2 draw with Berwick at Shielfield on Saturday.

A Robert Wilson own goal, plus a Gary Fraser strike saw the Angus side lead twice, but on both occasions they were pegged back by the home side with strikes from Ousman See and Paul Willis.

With Peterhead winning it means Montrose have now seen their lead at the top of the second division cut to three points.

But at the final whistle both sides had to settle for a point, which on reflection was a fair result.

Gable Endies assistant boss Ross Campbell said: “Given our league position it is disappointing to lose two points, but that’s to take nothing away from Berwick because they played well and made it difficult for us.

“I am led to believe our second goal may have been deflected by a player in an offside position, so in that respect we have been a little lucky as well.

“But the lads are hungry for success. They have shown a lot of improvement since the manager (Stewart Petrie) came in and we are just happy to be where we are at the top of the table.

“Peterhead are still everyone’s favourites for the title, but we will keep doing what we have been doing and will try to make it as difficult as we can for them.”

Goalscorer Fraser, whose strike took his season’s tally to eight, said: “It was a poor result for us, because in our position we are looking to win matches to keep the momentum going.

“That’s two games in a row we have dropped points and I am not quite sure what the reason for that is, but we have a good bunch of lads in the dressing room and I am sure we will pick ourselves up again.

“We are still not losing many games, which is a positive, but three points are always better than one, that’s for sure.
