Surveillance plan to protect Blairgowrie town centre

-

CCTV cameras could be fitted in Blairgowrie town centre following a spate of vandalism.

Police Scotland deployed extra patrols in the run-up to Christmas to address a surge in complaints about antisocial behaviour.

The option of installing a CCTV system was considered by Blairgowrie and Rattray Community Council after a request from a member of the public.

Local councillor Bob Brawn agreed to discuss the move with officials.

The Conservative councillor said a privacy impact assessment would have to be carried out to establish the effect on nearby homes and businesses.

If approved, the cameras could be included as part of a new enhanced CCTV system to be rolled out across the region.

In December, the Courier revealed that surveillance headquarters could be established in Perth city centre.

The scheme would involve fitting new digital cameras featuring tracking technology to allow suspects to be targeted and followed through the area.

The Perth plan involves upgrading the minor traffic and public safety monitoring centres, which are operated in the city by both the local authority and Police Scotland.

Contracts for the scheme are likely to go out to tender in the coming weeks. The full cost has yet to be unveiled.

Police dealt with numerous reports of vandalism in Blairgowrie during the early winter months.

Metal brackets used for floral baskets and Christmas lights were ripped out and thrown into the River Ericht.

Damage was also caused to seasonal decorations and a well in the square.
