Laura Muir and Eilish McColgan are on track at tonight’s World Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

The women’s 3,000m final is one of the opening events of the four-day programme, with both athletes returning to action for tomorrow night’s 1,500m heats.

Muir, 24, is no stranger to doubling up events after contesting both the 3,000m and 1,500m 12 months ago at the European Indoors in Prague when two golds fell her way.

Two weeks ago the Milnathort athlete claimed the 3,000 metres title at the British Indoor Championships in Birmingham ahead of McColgan, who contested the 1,500m heats just an hour later before going on to win the final.

Muir, who misses the commonwealth Games as she sits her veterinary degree finals at Glasgow University, expects this to be “the most challenging year of my career” as she juggles her double life of studies and athletics.

McColgan believes she is in the best physical shape of her career.

“Recent races in Doha, Madrid and Birmingham have given me the confidence boost I needed and reaffirmed that winter training in Kenya has gone better than ever before.”

Meanwhile Greg Rutherford has pulled out of this week’s championships.

The 31-year-old, an Olympic, World and European long jump champion, has decided to focus on the outdoor season.
