Dundee’s trip to Celtic wiped out by big freeze

- IAN ROACHE

Dundee fans were spared a battle with the “Beast from the East” as their match against Celtic was postponed due to the heavy snow.

The Dark Blues were due to face the champions at Celtic Park last night.

However, with the weather making roads treacherous and more snow forecast, common sense prevailed and the decision to call the fixture off was taken at 9.30am.

A statement from the Dens club read: “Tonight’s match against Celtic has been postponed.

“The SPFL have advised that this is in view of the current weather disruption and road safety concerns. A new date will be announced shortly.”

Indeed, all three of the scheduled Ladbrokes Premiership games were postponed because of heavy snowfall, with Hibernian v Hamilton and Motherwell v Hearts also victims of the white-out.

The Scottish Professional Football League made an early decision and there were no objections from the six clubs involved.

An amber weather warning has been in place for much of Scotland, with a red alert in some areas where people are advised not to travel.

An SPFL statement read: “Following consultation and advice received from the clubs involved, Police Scotland and Traffic Scotland, the SPFL have decided to postpone the above matches in the interest of safety. We will contact the clubs to reschedule these fixtures at a later date.”

Meanwhile, Queen of the South boss Gary Naysmith has thanked Dundee United for keeping them informed of events at Tannadice leading up to the postponement of Tuesday night’s match.

He said: “It is never a good situation for clubs and fans, but credit to Dundee United as they kept us informed throughout our journey.

“Their pitch was clear at four o’clock but by the time we were at Perth at half past five we knew it was covered in snow.

“We stayed put at Perth and the game was called off shortly afterwards.

“The clubs are talking and it could be on again next Tuesday – however, the weather may put paid to even trying to organise that.”
