Reckless antics on St Andrews pier condemned

-

Reckless thrillseekers in St Andrews have been roundly condemned for putting their lives – and potentially the lives of the emergency services – at risk.

While heavy snow showers and strong winds continue to blow in off the North Sea, shocking video footage has emerged of people traversing the pier at St Andrews East Sands – despite the strong gusts and huge waves crashing around them.

The footage has sparked a renewed warning from the RNLI, who have warned people to stay away from the water for their own safety.

A spokesperson said: “Whilst snow has been the headline of this weather system, the east coast is also experiencing strong easterly winds and as a result, heavy seas.

“The RNLI advises that people stay away from the water until things improve.

“While it’s tempting to have a closer look and take pictures of the sea, it’s just not worth the risk.

“The waves are powerful and unpredictable and it would be very easy for anyone to be swept from their feet and carried out to sea.”

Those pictured in the video footage have angered many on social media who are concerned about the wider impact their actions could have.

One woman said: “What angers me more is they are risking the lives of the emergency services who would have to be called out and deal with them because of their complete stupidity.

“Some people think they are invincible. Fools.”
